Biography of music artist, Kati Mac: melodic rock at its best

Kati Mac's Biography

A native of Whitman, MA, Kati began singing at a young age. “Our house was filled with music. My sister and brother would come home for lunch from school and we would dance to records. It was a blast! My brother Bobby played guitar and we would sing Beatle songs. My oldest brother John played Johnny Mathis and Dionne Warwick records all the time. My Mother sang me to sleep every night. My Dad would often take me for rides in the country and sing. His moving introductions to each song, definitely made me become a songwriter” Kati’s songwriting literally began out of a family heartbreak. When she was 10, her 18-year-old brother Bobby died in a car accident. She inherited his guitar. Kati remembers,” The first song I learned was “Dock Of The Bay” because it was Bobby’s favorite. It was my way of staying close to him.” Her major musical influences were The Beatles, The Byrds, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Carole King and Phoebe Snow “I’ve got a thing for that jangly Rickenbacker sound,” Kati says with a smile. At nineteen, she arrived in New York City to attend NYU, and she began playing out immediately at famous NYC venues like the Back Fence and the Bitter End. Living in the city, provided fodder for her prolific songwriting. “I’m a storyteller, not a poet.” I love telling the story, capturing the emotion of it,” she states.

Kati’s talent as a singer took her on her next journey. Her powerful rock n’ roll voice earned her a job as lead female singer with Meatloaf. “I got to travel and perform all over the world which was a big dream of mine,” she remembers fondly. She landed the Meat Loaf gig when guitarist Bob Kulick saw her play with her own band at a small upper Eastside club in NYC. “It was very surreal,” Mac recalls. “I was a receptionist at a jingle company at the time and I got this call from Meat’s manager to come audition. I just had a gut feeling I was going to get it. He hired me on the spot. It was fabulous!” Returning from the road, session work for commercials and with artists ranging from Lisa Lisa to Michael Bolton followed, as well singing with Sting for a Disney movie. All helped pay for demos and making her own CD’s. She continuously wrote for and performed with her band around NYC. Her first 3 CDs, 18 Forever, Time, and Anicca, chronicle her growth as a singer/songwriter and built her reputation as an artist with something to say.

On September 11, 2001, Kati was living across the street from the World Trade Center in the area of Manhattan known as Battery Park City. Witnessing the horrific events of that day, literally running for her life and being evacuated from her home for six weeks, Kati was understandably traumatized. She reflects, “I couldn’t go back to my home. I started having panic attacks – anytime I went downstairs or saw a plane. It lasted for over a year. I was a mess.”

Fifteen months later, Kati was invited to sing at a Club Med on Turks and Caicos, and there, she began getting herself back. “Being on that beautiful island, made me feel like I could finally take a deep breath. I wrote the first song for my new CD, Poseidon’s Son, the night I got home, she remembers.” I also got the idea for my song about my 9-11 experience, “Trapeze,” while I was at Club Med. “I was beginning a Master’s Degree in music and creating a CD as a part of it,” She wrote across a broad stylistic range – funk, pop and traditional rock. Poseidon’s Son came together bit by bit at various studios all around NYC over that year of completing her Master’s Degree at Purchase College – from the stirring declaration of “Only Love,” The naughty and very fun “IsYaWitMe? (Will Lee of The Letterman Band on Bass), to the harrowing and cathartic “Trapeze.” “It was a wonderful collaboration of musicians, engineers and producers who I admire and who are also friends. Spin Doctors’ producer Peter Denenberg added a masterful mix of the first single “Only Love”. “For such a simple song, there is a lot going on in the production,” Mac says, “Peter did an incredible job! And the step out vocal by my buddy, revered R&B vocalist James D Train Williams, takes it to a higher place.”

It has been an amazing year for Kati already. On top of the release of her latest CD, Poseidon’s Son, the first single, “Only Love”, has been chosen as the theme song for the well known daytime drama Guiding Light. This has pushed her profile to new heights, winning her a growing and rabid online following and new demand for her music! She says, “I’ve had my music used for over 10 years by various daytime television shows. But this is unbelievable! We’re making a video of “Only Love”, starting radio pr, and my music is selling on line like crazy. I’m also playing out a lot in the next couple of months.” Excited by her new opportunities, she exclaims, “I’m going to do whatever it takes to make Poseidon’s Son a hit or at least enjoy the hell out of all this!”
